Can I also go fishing on my hunting trip?

The hunting season generally starts late in the fishing season when some waters are closed and the days are shorter. There are some fishing opportunities, but the fishing may not be as easy or productive as peak season. If you would like to combine some fishing with your hunting trip, let us know prior to your arrival and we will plan your hunt in an area that still has good late season fishing.

What experience do the guides have?

Owner and senior guide, Al Kircher, has been fishing and hunting throughout the South New Zealand for over 35 years and has been guiding since 1985. He is also a member of the NZ Professional Hunting Guides Assn, the NZ Professional Fishing Guides Assn, and a recognised Mountain Safety Council Outdoor leader. At times we use other experienced guides to compliment our guiding operation, these guides are selected on their ability to excel and to provide the best possible fishing or hunting experience. All guides have current First Aid Certificates and appropriate licenses as required by Industry Standards.

Where do we Hunt?

Tahr, Chamois, Red Stag, Fallow buck and Arapawa Ram are hunted throughout  the backcountry of the Central South Island, either on Public Conservation Land or private land. We also hunt in the Marlborough for Red Stag and Wild boar. and the Sika are hunted in the Central North Island.

How do we get there?

Most international hunters travelling to New Zealand enter through Auckland or Christchurch, an information document re travel details and transporting firearms will be emailed on confirmation of your hunt.

What do I need to take with me?

A comprehensive gear list will be provided on confirmation of your hunt.

What Experience do I need to have and how fit do I need to be?

Hunters do not have to be experienced climbers, but should be fit, active and able to walk in a variety of terrain such as steep hills, snowgrass, shingle and scree etc, age is no barrier, but a positive mental attitude, faith in the ability of your guide and a sense of humour will help ensure your success. For those that are questioning their own personal fitness and ability, we utilise Game Estates and select private properties to maximise your hunting opportunities.

What happens if the weather's bad?

The weather always plays an important part in any hunting or fishing adventure. We try to tailor our hunting itineraries to ensure that there is sufficient time to allow for weather problems, or to locations where the weather has less of a chance to disrupt your hunt. Over the past 25 years of guiding, I have never had a hunt that has had to be curtailed unsuccessfully because of the weather, but as in all hunting there has been occasions where it has gone to the wire - thats hunting!

What's included in each trip?

All hunting Itineraries are fully guided, airport to airport, and include all meals, transport, accommodation, any access or concession fees, field prep of trophies and Govt Taxes. Prices do not include taxidermy charges or alcoholic beverages.

Which Taxidermist do you recommend?

As guides we endeavour to show you experiences and create memories. Good looking trophies on your wall help to recreate those memories and are a very important part of the "story" in years to come. We use one of New Zealands best taxidermists - Andrew Holt of Big Game Taxidermy based in Christchurch close to the ChCh International Airport. We will visit Big Game Taxidermy prior to your hunt, and again when we drop off your trophies at the end if the hunt. andrew will make al the appropriate shipping arrangements to ensure your trophies arrive home in top condition.

How do I get my trophy home?

Big Game Taxidermy is fully qualified to ship your trophies home, either as mounted trophies, or expediting to your own taxidermist.
