Salmon Fishing Trips
On our Salmon Fishing Trips our experienced Salmon Fishing Guide will take you to some spectacular secret local fishing spots. During the high summer months of January, February and March, the chinook salmon migrate up the major braided river systems of the Canterbury region to spawn. Several of the top salmon rivers are within an hours drive of our base in Methven. The salmon usually range in size from 5 - 7 kg, but some years the average size can increase considerably and some monster salmon return to our rivers. nzbackcountryguides.com usually utilises a 4WD to access the salmon areas and sometimes utilises a jetboat to access some of the more inaccessible pools. Salmon fishing nearly always requires a very early morning start.
Salmon are usually caught on heavy spinning tackle and are most active early morning or in the evening. Fly fishing is an extremely challenging method of fishing for salmon because of the unpredictable nature of the runs and our large braided river systems. It is rare to encounter a fisherman using fly tackle for salmon, however we are keen salmon anglers at nzbackcountryguides.com and often choose to use a fly rather than the more common spinning gear and lures. We do have salmon flyfishing tackle for those experienced anglers wanting the ultimate challenge.
